Measuring Areas for Cleaning
1. Concrete Surfaces (driveways, patios, walkways)
- Grab a tape measure (the kind that pulls out and shows feet/inches).
- Measure one side — pull the tape from one end to the other and write down the number (that’s the length).
- Measure the other side — that’s the width.
- Multiply length × width.
Example: 20 ft long × 10 ft wide = 200 sq ft. - If the shape isn’t a perfect rectangle, break it into smaller rectangles, measure each, and add the areas together.
2. House Walls (for exterior washing)
- Walk around the house and measure each straight side (length).
Example: front 40 ft, side 30 ft, back 40 ft, other side 30 ft. Add them up → Perimeter = 140 ft. - Estimate the wall height (1 story ≈ 10 ft, 2 story ≈ 20 ft).
- Multiply perimeter × height.
Example: 140 ft around × 20 ft tall (two stories) = 2,800 sq ft of wall. - If the house has extra parts sticking out, just measure those too and add them.
3. Fence/Gutters
- Measure how long the gutters run along the roof edges.
- Usually this is about the same as the perimeter of the house.
Example: 40 + 30 + 40 + 30 = 140 feet of gutter.
Quick Tips
- Don’t worry about being perfect — round to the nearest foot.
- If it’s hard to reach, walk heel-to-toe (your foot ≈ 1 ft) for a rough length.
- Add pieces together if something isn’t a simple rectangle.
