Measuring Areas for Cleaning

1. Concrete Surfaces (driveways, patios, walkways)

  1. Grab a tape measure (the kind that pulls out and shows feet/inches).
  2. Measure one side — pull the tape from one end to the other and write down the number (that’s the length).
  3. Measure the other side — that’s the width.
  4. Multiply length × width.
    Example: 20 ft long × 10 ft wide = 200 sq ft.
  5. If the shape isn’t a perfect rectangle, break it into smaller rectangles, measure each, and add the areas together.

2. House Walls (for exterior washing)

  1. Walk around the house and measure each straight side (length).
Example: front 40 ft, side 30 ft, back 40 ft, other side 30 ft. Add them up → Perimeter = 140 ft.
  2. Estimate the wall height (1 story ≈ 10 ft, 2 story ≈ 20 ft).
  3. Multiply perimeter × height.
Example: 140 ft around × 20 ft tall (two stories) = 2,800 sq ft of wall.
  4. If the house has extra parts sticking out, just measure those too and add them.

3. Fence/Gutters

  • Measure how long the gutters run along the roof edges.
  • Usually this is about the same as the perimeter of the house.
    Example: 40 + 30 + 40 + 30 = 140 feet of gutter.

Quick Tips

  • Don’t worry about being perfect — round to the nearest foot.
  • If it’s hard to reach, walk heel-to-toe (your foot ≈ 1 ft) for a rough length.
  • Add pieces together if something isn’t a simple rectangle.
